1898 - Opening of the queen victoria building

Cutting & Making

The Opening of the queen victoria building in Sydney

In the July of 1898 the Queen Victoria building opened and there was a grand opening in the Town Hall of Sydney. This dress was inspired by the thought of those girls and women who attended that evening.

Deep diving into the year of 1898 women’s fashion in Australia at that time I came up with this design for my dress.

The dress was made from a shot silk taffeta fabric with a sheer silk fabric hand pleated over the bodice front.

Make it stand out

The making of a garment like this begins with the correct silhouette, I chose to create this original pattern by draping my full underbodice, skirt, and outer bodice.

This project was predominantly done during Sydney’s second big lockdown from covid 19 in 2021, using research material that could be sourced online and only out of materials that could be sent to me. This created a hard challenge before fitting in person.
